WILLIAM ST. ENTREPRENEURS SEEM TO IMPRESS COUNCIL MEMBERS WITH BUSINESS PLAN...GLASCOTT: LAWSUITS YET ANOTHER REASON TO KEEP HOLDING CENTER ON RIGHT TRACK...RIVERA: WHY CAN'T WE GET CRIME CAMERAS WHERE WE REALLY NEED THEM ON THE WEST SIDE? Tuesday's Common Council hearing chaired by North District Councilman Joe Golombek seemed to go the way of the entrepreneurs of Brothers Live Poultry. Those supporting their plan to put a poultry processing operation including a fresh meat and produce market at 1285 William St. seemed to outnumber the few opponents by a factor of six or seven to one. The fact that Council President Dave Franczyk had inspected the firm's similar facility in Brooklyn and found it "a clean operation," smell and noise free, seemed to be enough to win the day for this group of food industry professionals who are attempting to open a plant that will create 25-30 brand new living wage jobs. Reading the recent Buffalo News story about the tragic case of the woman who died at the Erie County Holding Center because guards did not supply her with needed medication as requested, reminded me of my recent talk with Democratic Sheriff nominee Captain John Glascott. During our conversation, Glascott pointed out that avoiding lawsuits is one more reason to maintain stringent safety and security standards in any public lock-up. |
