DENNIS GAUGHAN: “IT'S NOT THE THREE MEMBER TOWN BOARD...IT'S THE THREE PEOPLE ON THE TOWN BOARD”
What is the major problem with the Hamburg Town Board which has so often caused it to degenerate into chaos and ineffectiveness?
Having watched the recent spectacle that found the Supervisor absent, another board member forced to leave early due to illness, and a third member attempting to carry on despite the absence of a quorum, highly respected Hamburg attorney and Supervisor candidate Dennis Gaughan believes he knows the answer.
“It's not the three member town board, it's the three members currently on the town board that are the problem,” he declares. “Look, it was the voters of Hamburg who decided to save money by establishing a three member town board and we have to respect their judgment. However, being a member of a three member town board places certain responsibilities on those elected to these positions. It means that a town board member has to have the ability to attend all of the meetings as much as humanly possible. It means he or she has to have the ability to put his or her attention on the problems of the town, not their own personal issues or concerns.”
“That is why I am running for the position of Hamburg Town Supervisor,” Dennis Gaughan continues. “I am running to restore effectiveness and dignity to our town board, so that its members are once again addressing themselves to our problems, not making us the laughing stock of WNY.” Dennis Gaughan is running for Hamburg Supervisor as part of the Hamburg First Democrats, a new political club that is dedicated to revitalizing and reforming the town's Democratic Party.
“The Democratic Party of Hamburg has not been winning in recent years nor has it been able to raise money,” says Gaughan. “But, even more important I want to change the government of our town for the better. I agree with my friend Dennis Chapman who has pointed out that until we have town board members who act like adults, nothing is going to improve.”
Instead of squabbling among themselves, Dennis Gaughan feels the board needs to work on problems ranging from Woodlawn Beach to budget issues.
